History Behind Our Roast

The Charles & Faust Southside Select roast proudly continues the legacy of a pivotal piece of Mid-Atlantic American coffee culture. In the midst of the 1990s New Jersey diner scene, the Southside Diner opened its doors near the shore in Toms River, NJ. This bustling little spot served its loyal patrons until the start of the millennium. The food was exceptional, but the legendary coffee experience was unmatched. While the owner of the Southside Diner left business ownership over twenty years ago, his son RJ Charles now confidently carries forward the family story that had long since been relegated to memory.

It all started here. While the cornbread and chili special sold like hotcakes when available, our unmatched diner coffee always packed house.

Southside Remastered

Many pictures from the 1990s are of notable low quality by today's standards. Since the Southside Diner closed its doors before the advent of smartphones and social media, we had to improvise. On the back of every bag of Southside Select, we've placed our lovingly crafted remastered image of the diner. While it's not an exact match, it's close. We feel that the image fully captures the spirit of how the whole experience felt back then. However, that might be the nostalgia talking.

The Southside Select roast is a warm tribute to those who work tirelessly in the American service industry. These individuals often perform their duties without receiving the gratitude they deserve, yet their contributions are essential to our daily lives. While some of these positions are rarely honored, we believe it’s time to shine a light on these unsung heroes (and their families). We offer this roast as a small token of our appreciation and encourage others to recognize and value the immense contributions these individuals make to keeping our society running smoothly each and every day.

  • Within the same range. We took our competition into consideration when originally pricing out our coffee. However, our first priority is ensuring we are properly priced to cover all of our costs to bring Southside Select to market.

    We feel that we hit the sweet spot with our pricing. Each 12oz bag is around 340 grams in size. Say you use around 24g per cup, which gives you 14 cups from one of our bags - that breaks down to around $1.29 per cup ($18/14).

    $1.29 per premium cup of Southside Select authentic diner style coffee? Not bad! Especially when compared to the higher ticket prices and lower quality coffee found in the big name coffee chains for just one cup.

A Nostalgia Trip.

Another early tester here. What a nostalgia trip this roast is, I used to frequent the Southside Diner during its heyday back in the 90s. All my life I’ve sampled coffee from different places, big names to unknown brands that just left me unsatisfied - until now. One sip of Southside Select medium roast coffee will guarantee you’ll taste the difference. Spectacular, bold, and a great taste that is easy on the palate. This is one of the best coffee roasts I’ve had, hands down.

One of the Best Coffees Out There!

I was one of the early testers that was lucky enough to get the opportunity to sample a cup and I’m glad I did. The rich flavor and smoothness of the coffee are a few qualities that are missing from generic store brands. The aroma of the blend is comforting and makes you feel at ease. The Real Deal Diner Coffee!

I was able to sample the Southside Select roast as an early tester and an avid coffee fan. All I can say is wow, I think I found my new brand! This coffee is true to its authentic diner style claim, and I like that it shows some love to workers in the service industry (as one myself). No bitter bite like you find in lower quality store coffees, and it’s also more full bodied than some of the other independent coffee brands out there. I can’t recommend this coffee enough!
